Laser cutting head repair and service

The head is where the beam meets the job, and it is where a cut-quality complaint usually gets blamed first. Sometimes correctly. Collimator and focus modules, protective window assemblies, nozzles and ceramic rings, capacitive height sensing and the motors and sensors inside an autofocus head, on the platforms below and on heads that no longer have a support route.

What is inside a cutting head

A modern autofocus cutting head is a small instrument. The cable interface and its beam entry, a collimating stage, a motorised focus stage with its own position feedback, protective windows above and below the working optics, a nozzle and ceramic ring assembly carrying the capacitive height signal, air and water paths for cooling and cleanliness, and sensors reporting temperature, window condition and sometimes internal contamination.

Nearly every one of those can produce “the cut has gone off”. A window that has started to absorb, a focus stage losing position, a nozzle no longer concentric, a ceramic ring cracked, a capacitive signal drifting with moisture: each gives a different edge on the plate and all of them arrive described the same way.

Laser cutting quality problems are the reason most head enquiries start, and the head is one candidate among several: what reaches it, what it does with it, and how it is held off the plate. The other reason heads matter commercially is that a head is a substantial part of a machine’s value. Whether repairing one is better value than replacing it is a question the written findings answer for your head, with both numbers in front of you.

Cut quality loss, focus drift and protective window life

These are the descriptions we are given. Each one is produced by more than one cause, so none of them identifies a fault on its own. They are the right way to start a request, and every one of them is something you can see without opening anything.

  • Cut quality gone off with the same program and the same sheet
  • Focus drifting during a shift and needing constant correction
  • Protective window burning through far faster than it used to
  • Nozzle and standoff readings inconsistent across the table
  • Head crashing, mis-homing or losing capacitive height sensing
  • Water or air leak inside the head, or condensation on the optics
  • Collimator or focus motor no longer responding to the controller
  • Piercing failing on thicker plate that used to pierce cleanly

Consumables that are not really consumables

Protective windows, nozzles and ceramic rings are consumables, and their consumption rate is information. A shop that has gone from changing a window every few days to changing it every shift has a fault somewhere, and buying more windows is not the answer to it. The same applies to nozzle life that has collapsed, and to ceramic rings cracking repeatedly in the same way.

So we treat consumable life as a symptom rather than as a purchasing question. Which system is behind it — beam condition arriving at the head, internal contamination, cooling, assist gas, or the height control keeping the nozzle off the plate — is what the evaluation establishes, and the findings say which.

The head and the beam arriving at it

A head can only work with what reaches it. If the delivery cable or its connector has degraded, the beam presented to the collimator is not the beam the head was built around, and the result on the plate looks exactly like a head problem. That is why a head enquiry and a source enquiry are frequently the same job, and why we would rather cover both than hand you a head back with the fault still upstream of it.

If your symptoms point that way, the laser source and delivery cable page sets out that scope. If the machine is stopping rather than cutting badly, start at cutting machine repair.

What we repair and what we replace

Stated as scope rather than as a method. What a given machine needs is settled by its condition and by the written findings, and nothing is repaired, substituted or modified until you approve the scope and the price.

Collimator and focus modulesRepaired and rebuilt, including motorised focus stages and their position feedbackModules beyond economic repair, quoted before anything is ordered

How a job runs

  1. What you send. Machine make, model and serial number, the laser source model if you have it, the control platform on the operator panel, what the machine does now and what changed. Photographs of labels and of the fault display help.
  2. Written scope and a fixed evaluation fee. Quoted before anyone travels, with what the evaluation covers, the expected turnaround and what a negative result would mean.
  3. What the evaluation covers. The as-found condition, the actual configuration rather than the recorded one, the machine and the laser as separable systems, and the services around them, with instrumentation named in the proposal.
  4. Written findings. What was measured, what was found, which subsystem the fault sits in, what remains unknown, and the options with their cost and risks.
  5. Your approval. Nothing is repaired, substituted or modified until you approve the scope and the price in writing.
  6. Work, validation and report. Inside the approved scope, then measured validation against the machine reference and a written service report you keep.

Scope and safety

Two limits we state on every page

We do not promise a specific repair before diagnosis, and we do not certify equipment to original published specifications where the original acceptance data and the corresponding standards are unavailable.

Independent service

PhaseX Laser Services is a registered DBA of CoreX Robotics Services LLC and an independent service company. We are not an authorized service centre, agent, representative or affiliate of any manufacturer named on this page, and we do not perform manufacturer warranty work. Brand and model names identify equipment only and remain the property of their respective owners. Work on equipment under an active manufacturer warranty is performed only within a scope authorized in writing by the equipment seller or manufacturer.

Laser safety on your site

Work is carried out to the site rules and the laser safety arrangements in force at your facility. Where a machine has to be run with guarding open for a measurement, that is agreed in advance with your safety officer and recorded in the scope.

Questions owners ask

Is it cheaper to repair a cutting head or replace it?

That is a question we answer with a quotation rather than a rule of thumb. The written findings state what was found, what the repair covers and what a replacement would cost, and you decide. Where replacement is genuinely the better answer we say so.

Protective windows are lasting a fraction of what they used to. Is that the head?

It is a symptom, and the head is one of several candidates alongside the beam arriving at it, internal contamination, cooling and assist gas. Buying more windows does not answer it. The consumption rate is useful information for the evaluation, so bring it.

Which head platforms do you work on?

Raytools, Precitec, WSX, BOCI, OSPRI, Laser Mechanisms, HIGHYAG and the heads fitted to imported machines, including ones with no local support route. We are independent and not an authorized agent of any of those manufacturers.

Do you need the whole machine, or just the head?

Frequently just the head, together with the cable and interface hardware if the symptoms point upstream. The written scope says exactly what to send before anything is shipped, so nothing arrives incomplete.
