Flexo plate imaging

Esko CDI flexo plate imaging service

A plate room that stops does not stop quietly. Prepress sits in front of press scheduling, so an imager that is down becomes missed press windows within a shift - and there are very few independent companies in North America who will look at this class of equipment at all.

The platform, and what Esko publishes about it

The CDI is Esko's digital flexo plate imaging platform, and Esko publishes its imaging options and screening software on its own site. Two of those are in our source ledger from an earlier verification round and are named here on that basis: the Optics 40 imaging option, which Esko lists among the optics options in its CDI range, and Pixel+, which Esko documents as a screening and imaging capability rather than as a separate machine.

That distinction matters when something goes wrong, because "Pixel+ output looks wrong" and "the imager will not image" are not the same fault and do not live in the same part of the system. One is a screening and imaging question, the other is a machine question, and conflating them is how a plate room loses a day.

Why so few companies will look at these

Plate imaging sits in an awkward gap. It is not a cutting machine, so general industrial laser service companies do not cover it. It is not a press, so press service organisations do not either. It is a low-volume, high-value platform in a specialised room, usually one or two units per site, with nobody on staff who owns it.

The result is that most plate rooms have exactly one support route and no alternative. That is a bad position when a platform is old enough that its maker has reasonably moved attention to current products, and it is the reason this page exists.

What a plate room reports

In the operator's own description: plates coming off with imaging defects that were not there last week; output that no longer matches what the screening setup should produce; the imager refusing to start a job; drum or carriage movement that has become audibly or visibly wrong; and the one that costs most, intermittent faults that appear on some jobs and not others.

We treat those as what they are - what the room is seeing - and establish the rest by looking. Our flexo plate imaging page covers the wider imaging and engraving category, and the symptom index routes symptoms that turn out to belong somewhere else.

What we accept

Esko CDI platforms are accepted for evaluation and service on site across the United States and Canada, including platforms out of production and units with no documented service history. Where a subassembly is better looked at off the machine, bench work is quoted inside the same written scope.

PhaseX Laser Services is an independent service company and is not an authorized Esko service centre, agent, representative or affiliate, and does not perform manufacturer warranty work. Esko, CDI, Optics 40 and Pixel+ are Esko's and identify equipment only. Where a platform is under an active manufacturer agreement we work only inside a scope authorized in writing by the seller or manufacturer.

And the same two limits as everywhere else: no promise of a specific repair before diagnosis, and no certification to original published specification where the original acceptance data and the standards behind it are unavailable. In a plate room the second one is worth stating twice, because imaging quality is exactly what people want certified and exactly what needs the original data to certify honestly.

Questions owners ask

Our CDI is years out of production. Is it still serviceable?

Out-of-production platforms are a large part of what we are asked to look at across every sector on this site. Send the platform designation from the machine and what the room is seeing, and we will tell you what can be established.

Can you help with Pixel+ output problems?

We accept the platform for evaluation including its imaging and screening behaviour. Whether a given output problem is a machine fault or sits in the screening and imaging setup is one of the things an evaluation establishes - and worth establishing before anybody changes hardware.

Are you authorized by Esko?

No. We are an independent service company, not an authorized Esko service centre, agent or affiliate, and we do not perform Esko warranty work.

How quickly can someone be on site?

That depends on where you are and what the evaluation needs, and you get a date with the written scope rather than a promise on the phone. Tell us what the press schedule looks like this week - it changes how we sequence the work.

Do you work on other plate imaging and engraving platforms?

Yes. The wider category, including other imaging and engraving makers, is covered on our flexo plate imaging and gravure and screen engraving pages, and every brand we see is listed in the brand index.

Tell us what the machine is doing

Five fields to start, and no obligation either way. We reply with an assessment and, where site or bench work makes sense, a written scope and a fixed fee for your approval.
