Scientific laser repair

We diagnose, repair and recommission scientific laser systems.

Ultrafast, picosecond, pulsed fiber, Ti:Sapphire, nanosecond and parametric systems. Out of warranty, discontinued, or never properly supported in North America to begin with. We also integrate new optical systems, relocate laboratories and bring them back into service afterward. On the bench in Parsippany, New Jersey.

We review service requests promptly and connect you directly with the engineer responsible for the work.

What we do

Five things, on systems most service organizations will not touch

We work on the laser as a complete electro-optical-thermal-control system, because that is where the faults actually sit.

01

Diagnose

Fault localization through the seed, driver, pump, amplifier, delivery, conversion, feedback and control chain, with the measurement method stated before we start.

02

Repair

Component-level work on drivers, supplies, thermal control, feedback paths, fiber interfaces, mechanics and control electronics, including substitution and engineered replacement where an original part no longer exists.

03

Integrate

Optical path, optomechanics, motion, cooling, timing, interlocks and measurement brought together into a working, documented system.

04

Relocate

Pre-move optical and configuration baseline, controlled disassembly, packing and rigging coordination, then reassembly on the other side.

05

Recommission

Realignment, controlled startup and measured comparison against the agreed post-move criteria, with an open-item list you can act on.

06

Document

Optical layouts, settings, pinouts and test methods captured as deliverables, so the system does not live inside one student's notebook.

If the job is bigger than the laser

This page covers fault diagnosis and component-level repair on an existing laser. If the experiment itself has to be built, automated, moved or brought back into service, that is systems work and it is covered on scientific laser systems integration. The two are frequently sold together: we recover the source, then re-integrate it into the setup.

Not sure which of those your problem is?

Send the model, the label photo and the symptoms. We will review it and respond with the next step.

What we fix

If your system does any of this, we have seen it

These are the symptom patterns this service covers. Each one is separated from the others by measurement rather than by assumption.

01

No output at all. The system powers up and reports normally while nothing usable comes out.

02

Low or unstable power. Output a fraction of expected, drifting, or dropping out and returning.

03

Setpoint changes, output does not. The panel follows the command and the beam does not. A control-path or protection question.

04

Timing present, no usable output. Repetition rate and sync look correct. The timing board is alive. That says nothing about the optical chain.

05

Correct average power, wrong pulse. Right number on the power meter, unusable pulse duration at the sample.

06

Cooling and thermal faults. Chillers, flow, TEC loops, crystal ovens, and thermal derating that caps output silently.

07

Driver, supply and interlock faults. Diode and seed drivers, pump controllers, aging supplies, interlock chains and silent protection states.

08

Seed, amplifier and SHG problems. Seed and amplifier chain faults, fiber interface damage, and conversion stages judged only after the fundamental is measured.

The diagnostic reasoning behind each of these is set out on the technology pages below. Send us what your system is doing and we will tell you which branch it sits in.

How a job runs

Five steps, and you decide at step three

  1. Send what you have. Model, a photograph of the product label, the symptoms, and any measurements. We respond with the next step.
  2. Written diagnostic scope. A fixed diagnostic fee, the measurements to be made, the turnaround, and what a negative result would mean. Then you decide whether to ship.
  3. Findings in writing. What was measured, what was found, what is still unknown, and the repair options with their cost and their risks.
  4. Your approval. Nothing is repaired, substituted or modified until you approve the scope and the price in writing.
  5. Repair, validation and return. Work inside the approved scope, electrical, optical, timing and functional validation, a written service report, and documented packing.

Some jobs end with a finding that a system is not economically repairable, or that a failed custom assembly has no available substitute. You get the same written documentation, and it is frequently what a replacement purchase has to be justified with.

Measurements defined per project

Every engagement names its measurements before it starts. PhaseX defines and provides the measurement capability the project requires. Depending on the system and the question being answered, that is owned, rented or qualified third-party measurement resources arranged as required. The evaluation proposal states which measurements will be made, by what method, and where each one comes from, together with the acceptance criteria the work is judged against.

In-house instrumentation currently includes a RIGOL MHO984 oscilloscope and a Joulescope JS320 for electrical, current, timing and pulse-train work. Optical metrology is specified per project and provided through owned, rented or qualified third-party measurement resources arranged as required. We do not publish an equipment inventory in place of a measurement plan, and we do not offer manufacturer-equivalent calibration or certification to original published specifications where the original acceptance data and the corresponding standards are unavailable.

What to send

Keep the first message short. This is enough to get a real answer:

  • Manufacturer and model, and a photograph of the product label showing the complete model and serial number
  • Photographs of the head, controller, power supply and rear panels
  • What the system does now, and what it should do
  • What you measured, with what instrument, and where in the beam path
  • Your name, organization and how to reach you

Manuals, configuration sheets, acceptance data and prior service reports help, and on discontinued platforms your own paperwork is frequently the only surviving record of the configuration. Send it if you have it. If you do not, we work without it.

Two limits, stated plainly

We are direct about what we take on, so we are equally direct about the two boundaries.

  • We do not promise a specific repair before diagnosis. The diagnostic evaluation comes first and the repair scope follows from it.
  • We do not certify a system to original published specifications where the original acceptance data and the corresponding standards are unavailable. What we document is the measured condition on arrival, the fault found, the work performed, and the measured condition on completion.
Independent service

PhaseX Laser Services is an independent third-party service provider and is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any manufacturer named on this site unless expressly stated in writing. Brand names and model names are used only to identify equipment. Work on equipment under an active manufacturer warranty is performed only within a scope authorized in writing by the equipment seller or manufacturer.

Class 4 work is planned and executed under a project-specific laser safety plan. The required engineering controls, personal protective equipment, beam management and facility conditions are defined in writing before any energized optical work begins, and the infrastructure that plan calls for is provided within the project scope. Where a laboratory's own controls are involved, final hazard analysis and approval stay with the institution's LSO or EHS function.

Questions we get asked

Do you service lasers the manufacturer no longer supports?

Yes. Discontinued and end-of-support systems are the main reason laboratories contact us. We work at component level on drivers, supplies, thermal control, feedback paths, fiber interfaces, mechanics and control electronics, and we substitute or engineer a replacement where an original part no longer exists.

How does a job start?

Send the model, a photograph of the product label, the symptoms and any measurements you have. We review it and respond with the next step. If bench work makes sense, you get a written diagnostic scope with a fixed fee before anything ships.

Will you quote a repair before seeing the laser?

No. A fixed repair price before the fault is located would be a guess. We quote the diagnostic evaluation first, report the findings in writing, and only then quote the repair scope for your approval. No additional work happens without that approval.

What has to ship?

Normally the laser head, the controller, the power supply, all interconnecting cables and any dedicated module needed to bring the system to its normal operating state, including the pump where a parametric module is involved. A system that cannot be powered and commanded on the bench cannot be diagnosed.

Do you take systems from Canada and outside the United States?

Yes. We provide the commercial documentation a repair shipment normally requires and coordinate with your shipping office. Customs classification, duties, temporary import treatment and clearance timing remain the sender's responsibility, and we do not give customs guarantees.

Is PhaseX an authorized service center?

No. PhaseX Laser Services is an independent third-party service provider and is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any laser manufacturer unless expressly stated in writing. Brand and model names are used only to identify equipment.

For institutional purchasing

How to buy this through a university or a company

Procurement and risk teams need different answers from the laboratory. These are ours.

Entity

Who you are contracting with

CoreX Robotics Services LLC, a New Jersey limited liability company, trading as PhaseX Laser Services. One legal entity, one address, one set of terms. Vendor onboarding documentation can be coordinated with your procurement team.

Paper

Quotations and purchase orders

We issue a written quotation with a defined scope, a fixed diagnostic fee and a stated validity period. We accept purchase orders and work to institutional payment terms. Repair work is quoted separately after the findings, so a PO never has to cover an unknown.

Risk

Scope, liability and safety

Shipping, insurance value and customs remain with the sender, and we document the as-received condition on arrival. Where a laboratory's own safety controls are involved, final hazard analysis and approval stay with your LSO or EHS function.

For OEMs, dealers and integrators

We execute field and bench scope under your direction.

If you sell or support scientific laser equipment and need additional coverage in the Northeast, PhaseX performs the scope you authorize in writing. You keep the customer relationship and the warranty administration. We work to your documentation, under NDA where you require it, and we do not approach your customer independently.
